ATSF Ga-156 Gondola
I reworked a Walthers 53' corrugated-side gondola to get a close match to the prototype.
Below: My finished model is a "close enough" representation that captures the overall look and feel of the prototype.
Below: This very nice photo of ATSF 68223 guided my efforts on this project.
Right: Ga-156 gons have individual grabs
and no corrugations on each side end panel,
whereas the Walthers gon has boxcar-like
ladders and small corrugations. I removed
this detail and sanded the panels smooth,
then drilled holes and installed wire grabs.
For small-area sanding, I make small sanding
pads by gluing sandpaper to styrene
rectangles and adding a simple handle
from scrap shapes. This way I can make any
size, shape, and grit sander I want.
Below: Originally, ATSF 68223 had hoods for coil steel loading. This view clearly shows the vertical reinforcements on the car ends.
Below: I replicated the painted-out markings at the right end of each side by brush-painting on a slightly different color of brown.
Below: To re-create the "Z" shaped vertical end reinforcements, I added strip styrene to the car ends, followed
by lengths of C channel that was cut longways at an angle (thereby removing one flange of the channel). These
reinforcements "rest" on top the cushioned coupler pockets, for which I had to create extensions. Kadee long-shank
couplers are used to "reach" deep enough into the coupler boxes where the Walthers pivot pins are located.
Below: I added 0.010" styrene rectangles for the ATSF reporting marks and "Q" logos. I also upgraded the stirrup steps.
