ATSF GP39-2 3676
I started with a Athearn model decorated in Santa Fe warbonnet.
I added and modified details, and renumbered the unit to 3676.
I also replaced the lights with brighter LEDs and installed DCC with sound.
Weathering is a combination of artist oils and powdered chalks.
Right: This photo of the prototype
3676 circa 1985 inspired my
model. Thanks to the photographer

Santa Fe rostered a large fleet of
GP39-2s spanning several phase
variations. 3676 is a later phase,
with the diesel shifted toward the
back for better weight distribution.
This results in a noticeable blank
section between the cab rear
and the air intake grills.
The stock Athearn model was well-detailed out of the box. I added trainline air hoses and MU hose retainers on the
pilots, and spare coupler knuckles on the trucks. On the cab I added A-Line windshield wipers, and straightened
the stock number board inserts. A few small paint touch-ups and a bit of weathering completed the model.
Inside, I replaced the blub lights with LEDs and added a TCS keep-alive to support the sound DCC decoder.
